I have a pair of Convicts that spawned for the first time a couple of days ago.Since laying the eggs one of the pair does not spend anymore time with the mate and the eggs. Before laying the eggs they both dug out the pot and protected the cave from the others in the tank.Although I am not quite sure which is male and which is female because they are both the same size and color. The one that is staying with the eggs I think is the male though. He seems to be a very good parent so far but as I say the other one spends most of the time now at the other end of the tank-55 gallon- in the top corner and seems very listless sometimes spending some time at the bottom corner also.My question is I thought both parents took care of the fry with Convicts? Can anyone let me know if this is normal for them? Thanks for your help

When my pair first bred, they were the same way. Once the eggs were there the mother stayed with the eggs through the wiggler stage and chased away the male. It seemed however that once they were free swimming, the father stayed with them. Now that I have put in some dither fish they both seem to guard the eggs. However this has been the first spawn where they stayed together so I don't know how long it will be before they start to chase each other again.
