Aside from everything in the aquarium, (fish, plants, light, ferts, CO2 setup, ect...) What tools do you guys use or think are good for using in a planted aquarium?

As far as I can tell, the consensus for easily planting stem plants is a long pair of tweezers, or a pair of hemostats. How do you keep from crushing the stem?

What do you guys use to prune with? Would a plain (but sharp) pair of small scissors work? Or does it suffice to "pinch" the old leaves/excessive growth off?

For plants with a rhyzome, I know you can (usually) cut the rizome to get a second plant. Would a knife work, or is a razor needed?

I make an impression in the gravel with my finger and pull it along with the plant just behind for a short bit. When the plant is deep enough and where I want it, I nudge the gravel back into the short rut to cover and to make sure the roots are covered.

Right now though, most of my plants are still in pots or are floating, as the fish like to "rearrange the furniture" so to speak. It makes it more difficult for them to move the plants around, but it's not the best solution for rooting.

You should be able to find "long-handle" scissors - they are very useful..

ditto on the credit card. I actually use my big al's VIP card

I found a kit online (can't remember where- Aquabotanic/Florida Driftwood/similar) with long tweezers, a long scissor, and a long rake. All are made of stainless steel in a dandy leather case- I love them. I use the long tweezers for everything!

I believe that kit is available from Aquabotanic. I have had my eye on that kit for a long time. However, I managed to find the same tools at a local liquidator store. I couldn't live without my long hemostats. :) And long scissors come in handy too.

lol, my aunt was telling me she used to have an aquarium and she'd use a chopstick to chase the swordtail around when it bullied the other fish... :eeek: I'm glad I'm her nephew and not her fish
