i was just wondering if anyone has ever kept goldfish and guppies together in the same tank? I would really like to put my pearlscale goldfish (hes just a small 2.5" from mouth to tail) together with the 4 adult guppies in my 20 gal, and free up his tank for the guppy fry (10 gal). I am really worried if he'll be OK tho because hes my prized possesion and i like my guppies too. thanx

Down loader is right, it is not a good idea. Tropicals and coldwaters do not eat the same food or have the same water tempreture. Having said that, i have heard that they can be succesfully kept together with time and patience.

yeah, i kinda figured that it wasnt a good idea, but i was just wondering about what other people think, because i have seen it quite a bit before...

It depends, some fancy goldfish can withstand tropical temperatures up to 24 Celcius and can be adapted to that, and many tropical fish thrive in 24-25 Celcius. The second point is food, the foods that are made for tropical fishes hava a higher protein content than goldfish food, but I am not sure to what extent that may affect their diets, based on experience and some lectures it is not detrimental. Third, space the size of your tank and the decoration are very important the more space the better, in a typical 50 gal tank I wouldnt recomend it, but if you have a larger body of water say 250 gal+ it can be an option. Fourth a very good bio filtration in necesary, an over capacity larger filter is better. Fifth and last I am not sure about guppies but Mollies like to pick on the fins of other fishes, and a pearlscale goldfish has many, so you will need lots of space and hiding places as distractors.

okay. I keep both their tanks at the same temp. so i know that would be alright. but i have decided the risks outweigh the pros of having them togethur. he will soon be moved to a 50 gal where maybe ill buy him one or 2 buddies. i have an oscar in there right now but i wauld rather take him to the pet store soon becauze hes getting big (i didnt buy him, i rescued him from yet another person that thought that he would be alright in a 10 gal, or something dumb). i have no option to get any more larger tanks (im breaking my lease as it is with that 50 gal, but thank god no one can tell the difference, and im like "yeah, it IS a 40 gal") so that is my plan of action. thanx for the advice. BTW... if I was still going for putting them in together, i was thinking that wy pearlscale practically eats out of my hand, so i could feed him and the guppies each their own food.
