I have a 125G tank that currently contains only an 8" black arowana. I have read that stingrays make excellent tankmates for arowanas because of the stratification of the tank. I currently have black sandblasting sand as a substrate, but I have been told that this will be too rough for a stingray. I was wondering if anyone used something that was cheaply available as a substrate. Is play sand an option, or is it also too rough. The sand that was recommended at the LFS is $1/lb, which is slightly above my graduate student budget. Thanks for any info...

If money is an issue then a ray may not be the best choice.

They are expensive to buy and very expensive to feed.
Biweekly water changes are neccesary, and time=money and you being a grad student, study time.

I think playsand is suitable for rays. I've heard people say silica irritates their bottoms, but also many have said that silica has worked fine for them.

Try this forum. There are many more experienced ray keepers there.

non silica based is best. if it is smooth it will work fine, its just some sand is to sharp for them to rummage around in. the width of the tank is too small for rays, and the arowana will outgrow it soon. if you had a bigger tank i would suggest a school of tinfoil barbs that would look great with the arowana.
