I have a planted 29 gallon with 6 m. splendida austrilus (the biggest of these is about 4 inches), 6 diamond tetras, a pleco and a cory (two of its brothers/sisters disappeared without a trace?!!). Recently I've found some hair algae in the tank and am going to start reducing feeding etc., but also wanted to get some ghost shrimp since I've heard they're good algae eaters. I'd just like some estimates on how long you guys think 10 - 15 ghost shrimp will survive in this setup.
Thanks.

Hair algae is usually a result of a bad ratio of light:CO2, not over feeding or overstocking but that CAN contribute to it. I would check into what kind of lighting you have and whether or not you're providing pressurized CO2. It could also be due to a lack of nutrients, your tank isn't very heavily stocked for a 30 gallon. You may have to add concentrated nitrate or phosphates, although I'd be careful with that stuff. You may also want to get some faster growing plants as well. What kind of plants do you have?

Ghost shrimp are not good alage eaters, they prefer to clean up the extra food and waste, however in a tank like yours they would fall quick prey during the molting process.

Amano, or japonica shrimp are the ones you would want for keeping hair algae at bay. However, they don't do a good job of eating already progressive algae but rather suppress the algae before it can't get long enough to see. SAE's are better for getting rid of the hair, or black mollies, or american flag fish.
