Ok so today I wake up and find that there is something amiss in my tank. The after speculating at it for a bit I relize Mr Big and Grumpy Oscar is gone. Then i see him lying motionless 10 feet away from my tank. I was shocked! And pretty upset too! My question is: how did my fish manage to get out of a fully covered tank with heavy glass lids, while it was dark, and he could hardly fit through the lid! BWAAAA im sad... and angry too...

I dont think i want another Oscar... Any recomandations for other fish, preferably cichlids.

How about a festae, they're very interactive, a joy to watch go about their business in the tank, and very, very curios. Oscars are known for jumping out of the tank. My friend Jake has a 7 inch Oscar that can't seem to stay in his tank. Oh yeah, they're very powerful fish, so him/her getting past your glass covers is no biggie. God bless and I hope you have better luck in the future.

I've also had an Oscar leave the tank. It was during feeding time and he was just a little too excited. It was quite funny. I also had the same Oscar launch a tinfoil barb out of the tank a few days ago during feeding time. Also quite funny. However, not funny at all when you're not there to remedy the situation. Very sorry for your loss.

I have got to throw a word in for Jack Dempseys. They're beautiful fish, no messier than your Oscar was, and relatively low maintenance. If you got one small enough, it would probably help curb his aggression, and I don't think he'd have any trouble fitting in. Good luck with whatever you choose.

sorry to hear about your loss.

fwiw, I've heard of oscars hitting lids so hard that the flip the lids open and fly out. maybe that's what happened?
