Hello all,

I’ve been trying to figure out which cell phone to get, and I finally settled on one. The last phone I had took a dive out the car window (don’t ask), so I was forced into a new one. I had a Nextel before, but it was expensive and for what I used it for, the phone was generally not needed.

I just ordered an Audiovox 8610 flip phone. It is those pay-as-you-go types of cell phones. I did this so that I wouldn’t be on any kind of plan, and so that I could use up the minutes at my leisure.

… So, my question is – does anyone here have one of these cell phones? Is it generally a good one, and list your experiences with it.

Thanks, but I was looking for more of a personal reply... I have read the stuff on Cnet, and I appreciate how they allow us to read the reviews - however, people over on the reviews seemed extremely negative, or they were extremely positive.

I just wondered if anyone here has this phone, as I know that most of the members on AC aren't going to BS about it.

I'll BS a bit... :D
Audiovox used to be, and maybe still is, looked down upon in the car audio scene. As for a cell phone, maybe the quality is very good.
I don't have that brand....

Well I am not sure about all that... I was never into the "car scene" as far as audio goes. During my teens and 20's, all I cared about was having a car that would get me from point A to B. :p

As for the coverage area of the phone, I do know it is in connection with sprint. I looked on the map and it gets pretty darn good coverage - most of the 50 states, major highways, puerto rico & virgin islands area. As I said, I do not use the phones that much (not at home anyway), so I should be OK.

Thanks for your links and input on it.

I worked for radioshack a while back so I know a bit about cell phone. Audiovox is good. Not great, but not poor. I prefer LG and samsung, but audiovox isnt bad. How often do you use your phone? Unless you almost never use it, prepaid can be really expensive. Also, what service provider do you have with your phone?

I think the higher-end phones can make the difference if you are in an area with poor reception, but beyond that, I think it's mostly gadgetry.

I've had an Audiovox 8920 for a few weeks now and have no complaints yet. It does hold a signal better than my ~3 year old Samsung A400.

I have the audiovox 8600, and I'm not happy with it. The speaker, even though it's loud, isn't of good quality. .

I keep on hearing that Samsung is the way to go when it comes to cellular phones...

Than again, I have a friend who has an audiovox, and he is extremely happy with it.

To answer someone’s question a while back - if I use the phone for more than 150 minutes a month that would be rare. It would only cost me about $30-35 a month, and that is for long distance calls mostly. So, depending on how one uses his or her phone would dictate which plan to get. Did I get that right? :)

My “plan” will be virgin wireless, even thought their big thing is “with us, you have no bill”. It appears as though they are trying to target the youthful crowd, but I read a review by a 61-year-old lady who says she loves her phone, even though she isn't interested in things like ring tones, wallpapers, etc. I am in the same boat - could care less about the MTV crap Virgin is putting in their phones.
