Identify this plant/seed?

i have no earthly idea what kind of seed/plant this is..a friend gave me several of them and told me to plant them in my aquarium. i'm a bit skeptic...she says they take about a month to sprout once in the water, and bloom into long thin-wire-y stems with leaves on top that spiral? have you seen this before? thanks!

2" wide by 1" height by 0.5" thick of dark black/purple color, very hard.

i remember seeing this somewhere, dun really remember wat is it call.

one thing i could confirm is that this fruit is from the tropical countries. yes...It's a fruit.

It this a water plant? Cooool. I don't know it's english name, but it's very common in Asia. Infact, I just eat some during the chinese full moon festival.
