Hi,
I just received a 30 gallon tank and all the accesories (filters, air pumps, rocks, fake plants, etc) from someone who did not want it any more, and now after having my starting fish in for a couple days I have realized I think I want real plants instead of my fake ones. What is a plant that I could put in there, and what do I need to do to get the tank ready for plants (I only have gravel in the bottom right now) , and should I let the new fish cycle the tank completly out before I add plants, also i see things like co2 kits do I really need one of those when I am going to have fish making co2? Also what are the pros and cons of putting live plants in?

Welcome to the board!!
Go Here and read everything:

Start with the 'Setting up a new planted tank'.
Read the stickies at the top of the planted tank page.
As to one of your questions....you can plant at any time. They will help 'cycle' the tank for you. They will grow without CO2 if your lighting is within certain parameters. How much light are you supplying and what kind of substrate did you put into the tank?

the bulb that is on top of my fish tank is called a coral life 50/50 other than that i dont know any thing about it, as of right now all i have is gravel in the bottom, but i think i need sand too, do i need to empty my tank out completly to put sand in it?

thankyou for the help

That 50/50 is designed for marine tanks- if I am not mistaken it is a very white light. Maybe see if you can find one to fit in the 6700ºK range?

Welcome to the hobby!
I would suggest doing lots of research and question asking before you sink money into just about anything- trust but verify :D. There are 100 opinions about everything and it can be very very confusing at first. Just keep reading and soon it will begin to make sense.
