Hi all, just bought a Fluval 304 and got it all set up and the pump wont run. I plug it in and nothing. I assume that the motor is toast, but can anyone reccomend what to check out before I buy a new motor?

When you plug it in, are you feeling any vibration in the housing or hear any humming? If so, the motor is working fine, but it's not pulling water through for some reason. I discovered that I have to have my water at a certain level (my pumps sit on top of my uptake tubes) in order for water to flow through them.

Sometimes all you need to do is touch the impeller - the impellers on my filters sometimes 'stick' and I carefully touch them with a chopstick and they start going. Also, plugging and unplugging the filter quickly a couple times can jostle the motor into life. Be careful and gentle with the filter if you try these things, and if in doubt call the company - there should be a 1-800 number on the box or in the instructions. The staff at the store where you bought it may also have advice.

Thanks for the replies. It makes no noise when it's plugged in, and I stuck a wrench into the slot that accepts the impeller shaft and the motor is locked up. Looks like I got burned, I bought it from ebay. O well, I should still be able to fix it for cheaper than I would have paid for a new one.

well the setup was missing the impeller and I had planned on getting one from the LFS anyway, but I had no idea that it was a magnet too. That would explain why the motor didn't work :idea2: D'OH!

All is well now.

Glad you solved it!
BTW, saw your signature... not sure if you want to any fish to your setup, but a couple of Crossocheilus siamensis - Siamese Algae Eaters - would clear up that hair algae for you :)

Yeah, I was going to add a couple of SAE's to the mix, but I was told that they'd eat the plants too :(
