As I mentioned before, I got some Clown Loaches in trade for my evil gold gourami(s) Or is it gouramii??

Anyway, I've seen a lot of mention of importing ick with Clowns. I have seen it suggested to treat the tank at 50% dosage of an ick med as a preventative. Just to be on the safe side, I got some - all I could get was what they had at WallyWorld - Wardley's ICK Away. The active ingredient is Malachite Green - I read that the copper based stuff is bad.

So, is this stuff any good? Should I use it as a preventative, or should I wait and see if I get lucky?

There are some things to consider before treating an otherwise healthy tank with malachite green. First of all, this product is a dye...if this is a glass tank, it will die your silicon blue/green. Secondly, what other fish are in the tank and can they tolerate the addition of the dye.

I can't stress strongly enough that clown loaches REALLY should be quarantined before adding them to a community tank. Why subject the rest of your tank to the almost inevitable ich outbreak? Even if the loaches don't carry the parasite into the tank with them, it might be there in your tank already but not visible because the occupants have a healthy immune response built up to it...even if it's a two gallon tuperware container with a heating pad and an airstone, you really should Q these guys for a week or so before adding them...

Lesson Learned

No other fish will ever get into a tank of mine without qetting quarrantined first.

As to the question of treating or not, well, it has been answered. I have seen the pictus, and the red-tailed shark both rubbing on things. I thought I saw a CL or two doing it as well, but they are so active, I may have seen the same one twice.

The red-tailed shark has started acting wierd - he goes up in the corner by the filter tube and wedges himself between the glass and the tube and stays there - vertical.

The temp is on the way up. We have been at a steady 78.4* forever... By the time I go to bed I expect to be up to about 82*. I'll shoot for 86* tomorrow. I wish I could stay up all night and make it a steady climb, but I know I will get to the limit of the heater's capacity pretty soon. We have also adjusted the air conditioner to bring the room up to about 80* - that should help the heater do the job.

Just to let you know, my clowns scrath thereselves all the time, along w/ my zebras. Not constantly, but at least once a day I'll see them scratch thereselves on the ground or on a piece of driftwood. Never had problems w/ ick, though.
