My little sister went to a caravel tonight for halloween, came home with two new gold fish. Great... now I'm one of those irresponsible fish owners. All I had to put them in was a 2 gallon tank. I have a carbon filter that I keep in one of my other thanks, that i put in there. left the filter going in the water for about half an hour, the bags just floating in the water, then I stuck them in. That was about all i could do for them. I know that goldfish need about 10 gallons a piece, which I told my sister when she came home with the new fish. So I have no clue what I am going to do with these little guys. I will use them to cycle the 50 gallon I'm getting soon (new cichlid tank), but after that, who knows. There is a good chance these are feeder gold fish, would that drastically decrease their life span? 1 week in the 2g, then a few in the 50g, then back to the 2g they will have to go… how long could they live in that little water?

I feel bad for them, but honestly, these two are probably better off here than they are at all the other winners' homes. poor fish :(

not long.
If kept in a good tank a feeder will live for a while, unless they were really man-handled or damaged (which they generally are, no one cares about feeders). If your really worried try to find another fish lover who will take them from you (lfs will just laugh if you try to give them feeder goldfish, and even if they do take them, they'll end up in somethings stomach), because they wont live long in a 2gal. Not to mention, if you using them to cycle a tank, that will just be more stress.

uh, i have a pacman frog that will eat them, if you wanna go that route...

I feel your pain. I just took in 9 feeder goldfish from the place I work. They had bought them for their "fair day" and had 10 goldfish in a one gallon bowl. I volunteered to take them home, otherwise they would have been flushed or else someone else would have taken them and kept them in the bowl. So now they are in a 20 gallon, it's the best I can do. It's bare bottom to give them more room, no decorations. BIG filter. I am going to see if the pet store will take them back for free. I feel bad for them, but I don't want feeder goldfish for the next 5 years!

they don't look quite like feeder gold fish, which is odd. they are smaller... golder. I don't know. I can't afford another tank, I guess I will just let them live their course. they are doing alright now, they are active. I don't want to just have them tapper off and die, but I don't have any fish that could eat them. and honestly, if I do anything with them: feed them, flush them, sell them, my little sister will be upset. I don't have much choice for them, at least they will be happy for a while in the 50 gallon. Its not like the little tank they are in now was cycled first too, luckily I keep that filter in my 20 gallon just in case I need it.

Well, use 'em to cycle the big tank. Leave them in there with the cichlids for food. It's good for kids to learn about nature and its ways. If she's all that upset, let her "have" one of the cichlids in your tank. When I was about 8 yrs old I got my first tank. It was a 10 gallon community for a few days, then it became my oldest brothers cichlid growout/ feeder tank for his 100 gal.
