I just installed the AHS 1x55w PC Bright kit, all I can say is wow!! I originally had a 20w actinic bulb, and now I have a 55w 50/50 bulb. The reflector that comes with the kit is amazing, I installed the light with and without the reflector and the reflector makes a huge difference, like adding another 20w. I almost blinded myself when the reflector caught my ceiling lights. I eventually want to build my own hood with both lights. Anyway just some useless info.

I wouldn't say it is useless, I have been looking for some lights and was strongly considering the AHS kits and so hearing someone say how much they like them really makes me feel more at ease ordering from them (there is usually a flag in my mind about quality when I hear somewhere being one of the cheapest) so for whats its worth thank you very much for posting. :-D

I think as far as price goes the AHS kit is a good deal because you have to wire it yourself. The wiring is super simple, and the instructions are great. Not like the instructions that came with my Awuaclear powerheads, they were non-existent, an box of parts which you had to figure out what went where by the picture, probably a piece of cake for experienced people, but for a newbie like me who had never seen a powerhead it was a little frustrating.

what size (inches, that is)

Vdub, what size lighting was your upgrade? I have a 55gal which has two 24" light fixtures on it, and I'm wondering if I can use the original plastic hoods with one of their upgrades. From their website info & pics, I think that I can, but I'd really like to hear it from someone who has actually done the upgrade.
Thanks!!

I hae a 30G with 24" ligh, the reflector is about 4" wide. I just removed the original lightand housing, and followed the instructions(really simple), there are a few holes to drill, and the reflector fits really nice in the factory hood. There wasn't any room for the ballast, but the wires are really long and I wanted to run the ballast remote anyway. The lighting kit I got was there 1X55 PC kit with a 50/50 bulb. Are your 24" fixtures side by side or lengthwise? If you needed 2 24" I would buy two 1X55W kits then you get two ballasts, and you can turn the lights off individually, the 2X55 kit only comes with one ballast. This would cost only a liitle more and I think it would be better to have more light control.

Anyway as long as your factory hood is at least 4" wide(the width of the reflector) the lights will fit.

Thanks, Vdub, that was exactly the info I needed!
My light fixtures are beside each other, not one in front of the other. This tank has a divider on top, so it holds two covers & two lights.
I've been looking around to see if I could find replacement covers, so if I needed to, I could use different light fixtures, but haven't had much luck.
Found them once-didn't write down the website-promptly forgot where they were at!!
I had decided that i would need two kits, not just one, since they are separate light fixtures.
I really appreciate the info!

They kits that thety make are all seperate. For example a 1x55 kit has one reflector, one ballast, while the 2x55 comes with one ballast and two reflectors.

I was suggesting ordering two 1x55 kits so you can have two ballasts, and be able to control the lights independently.

Sorry, didn't make myself very clear there-I'm planning on 2-1x55w packages, rather than the one 2x55w. I appreciate your help!
