I have a Marineland Penguin 125 power filter. The pad in it is $5 to $8 each. Is there a way to make a DIY one?

I just cut the old pads off and attach pads that I have cut to fit. I use elastics usually to attach the new pads.

What happens when the rubber breaks down> Wont it kill my fish?

The rubber doesn't kill your fish. It usually does break after a while though. I usually change rubber bands when I clean the filter. Some good holders in that link spartan provided though. That would be even easier than what I'm doing.
