Can I put my air pump in a wooden box lined with acoustic ceiling tile material to make it less noisy?

I wouldn't--they tend to heat up in enclosed areas, not good. Try placing it on a cloth--usually the primary noise is from vibrations against a hard surface.

Another way of adding the necessary oxygen to the tank is by surface agition you disturb the surface of the water enough and it brings in all of the oxygen the fish will ever need. I used to have all sorts of air pumps running and ya they were louder than my canister filter, but then I found out that if i aim the output nozzle torwards the surface and create the surface agition that i no longer needed airstones and pumps It works best with canister filters could probably work with a HOB of course youll loose the cool bubles but at least youll be able to study ... :dance :troll:  :idea2:
