I've noticed this film of tiny bubbles on top of the water of my tank. I don't think it's all bad or anything my fish act and look healthy. It just looks kinda weird like something funky is growing.

I have a 55 gal tank with a penguin 330 and 4 small fish (2 corys & 2 Zeb. Danios)

Anyone know what that could be? I've noticed it comes and it goes and it mainly comes back when i do a water change or add water to the tank due to evaporation.

Thanks.

How much surface agitation does the tank normally have? It sounds like a protien film, or an oily residue that clumps and bubbles when you disturb the surface. I have it in one tank--as long as there's enough surface agitation I don't see it. Typically not a huge problem, but I've heard rumors that this can inhibit oxygen exchange.

There is surface agitation...i mean the water doesn't splash all over the place but the water is being moved around when it exits the filter. So you mean with more surface agitation that can go away?

Any idea on how to get rid of this stuff? it's gettin on my nerves.

Yes, you need more surface agitation. If you have one, just angle the outtake of a powerhead towards the surface. The problem will go away.

I had this problem when I first set up my tank. I was using too much Stress Coat when doing the water changes. It was filmy and bubbly at the top only. So I READ the directions on the bottle (duh) and then did regular water changes and the bubbles finally went away.

hmmm now that you mention about too much stress coat. I think that may be the problem. I don't think i use too much but i'm always adding water to the tank. I don't have a hood and water evaporation is a pain. I'm always adding water...at least a gallon or two a week, and since the water here in SD has a bunch of nasty stuff i use Prime to de-chlorinate it. I don't feel i use too much...or do I? hmmm i'll try to changes next time I need to add water. I'll add less stress coat and see what happens.

Does that sound about right?
