I was wondering, are angels and discus compatible? I have an angel in my 55 gal. and I'm getting 6 new discus on saturday. Thanks in advance!

Not recommended.
The Angels are much more aggressive feeders and will outcompete the Discus for food.
And intimidate the &*^% out of 'em.

Have a "Plan B"??

Many people have done this with no problems. You should how ever start with the discus first then add the angels. Plus discus like warmer water that some fish don't care much for. www.simplydiscus.com is a great website for all discus questions.

The answer is yes, but not with 6 discus in a 55g. You're maxing out the tank with that many.

Angels and discus are compatible, but there's definately things you have to consider. Add discus fish and angels later, like Pacman said. Make sure that, if the angels are around the size of discus, they don't pick on them (angels can be pretty bad with discus). Spread food around the entire tank so the discus don't have to compete so much amoung one another.

So I guess I have to sell the angel :(
This sucks.
Thanks for the info.

Well see how it goes, and if need be sell the angel. Lots of people do this - compared to providing clean water and good food this would be a minor concern for me.
How big the angel, how big the discus. Bare bottom, planted...? You might find the presence of a larger fish stops some of the squabbling you always with young discus

The angel is about 2.5'' and the discus (so the website says) are from 2-3''. So they are roughly the same size. The tank is lightly planted with play sand for substrate.

I believe I remember thinking about this idea a while ago myself...... Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there some kind of disease that the Angels carried that were potentially dangerous for the Discus?

No... nothing about that's been proven... it was published once and has lingered since.

Dismantle.... what kind of cleaning regime are you planning? Once your discus are full grown, they will be already pushing the bioload... the angel might over do it.

I was thinking about 25% water change every day or every other day. Is this enough?

And before I forget, What kind of foods should i buy? Right now I have brine shrimp flakes, freeze dried bloodworms, TetraMin Pro, tetra Spirulina (sp?) flakes, pellets for small cichlids, and tetra color. Thanks

I actually hav a 55 gal and have 6 discus in there I also have one marble
Angelfish "wimpy" and to be honest it is really to much fish for one tank to handle especially the angel very aggressive. So im going to be moving him out of the tank and into a 29 gal with another angelfish...

That should be enough water changing. Again, when your discus come in, remove the angelfish and put him back in like an hour after everyone else has been in there.

I've had angelfish that could care less about discus, but I've also had angels that simply won't leave them alone.

As far as foods go, the Discus, especially Juvis need a varied high protien diet. Frozen brineshrimp and bloodworms are almost a must, Tetra color bits are something that most discus keepers reccomend universally. When getting juvis they need to be fed many times daily, with small portions. Out of the wild discus are grazers, meaning they feed constantly all day, which is why the frequent small feedings are reccomended. Another reason for this is to keep the growth rate at the proper level. Clean water and a proper diet are CRITICAL to development and growth for little discus, if one is not given proper attention even for a short period of time, it can have an adverse effect on the fish. You may also want to look into making a beefheart recipie for the discus, its very high in protien, you should be able to find one on http://www.simplydiscus.com or http://www.discusasahobby.com

I dont know if I could handle the beef heart. I think I might puke! But Ill try it.
My question is where do I find liquid vitamins?
Thanks!

Just got back from my LFS and picked up frozen brineshrimp and bloodworms. They didnt have tetra color bits so I got New Life Spectra Discus Formula instead. Tomorrow is the big day! :D

I have a silver angel that is 1" or 2" bigger than my discus. So far it hasnt caused any problems to the discus and I might be getting about 10 dime-sized ones later on. :D Ive tried feeding mine beefheart but they havent eaten it. Maybe i should try it again since i tried feeding them it on their first few days. My main food is tetramin tropical flakes and the dicus love it. I also feed mine freeze-dried bloodworms or frozen bloodworms/brineshrimp once in a while.
