I've been doing water changes with RODI almost every 4days. It is still up around at least 8.6 or higher. I have a 75gal, 90lbs LR, 80lbs LS, remora Pro skimmer, aquaclear 500 foam and bio cubes and an oceanclear 325 with mircon media and carbon. How do I get the PH down and what will happen if I can't. What do I need to do?

Thanks for any help.

What sand are you using for your LS? If it's an aragonite sand it's meant to keep the ph level at about 8.4-8.6.

8.6 isn't that bad. What's your alkalinity? Having it stable but a bit high is much better than having it yo-yo around.

I agree that 8.6 is not dangerously high. It is high though, and I think it's higher than the substrate can drive it.

When are you measuring? Does it go down at night? It may just be the result of a lot of photosynthesis. Or it may be funky test kit.

Trying to decrease it will probably cause a lot more harm than leaving it.

The Alk is on the high side to. I test my RODI before adding the salt and it's very low. After adding the salt (crystal sea) and letting it sit for 9hr covered, the PH is like 8.6. What causes the RODI water to go high after the mix? How do I bring down the PH if my RODI is high.

Do you need to replace any cartridges in your RO/DI unit? Do you have a TDS meter?
Are these expired test kits?
What brand?

Let the salt water mix for at least 24 hours as well with a good gph powerhead doing the mixing.

It is very difficult to get a correct pH reading on RO/DI water- it should theoretically be 7.0 but the absence of any ions at all (because of the DI) makes it hard to get a reading on.
Unless I have totally misunderstood pH/RO/DI- all I know is mix it, circulate it for 24 hours, and then test it..

the RODI is brandnew. Just installed this weekend. The test kit is a Red sea marine kit. It's only about 3mths old. Should I leave the Power Head in the whole 24hrs?

I just checked the RODI water's Ph, before mixing salt and it never chages color. It stays the same and the color of the Ph test kit. which is a yellowish.
