For the first time, I purchased some cichlids. Sigh. Near as I can tell, they are Neolampologus brichardi--they were just labelled Brichardi. The parents were in a show tank--gorgeous finnage, healthy, active fish. There were 6 adults, and then about 3-4 older juveniles and some fry in the 75.

I fell in love. Slap the sentimental label on me.

So, I picked up 5 of the juveniles. Largest is about 1 inch now, smallest being about 1/2 inch. They're in quarantine right now--ate well last night, hunted through the tank and are currently ducking in and out of a chunk of driftwood. I'd like for them to go into my planted 55 once they get a clean bill of health. Current occupants: 5 cherry barbs, a blue gouramie, 3 cories, one CAE, one chocolate pleco, 3 whiptails, a weather loach, 1 ancistrus, 5 otos. There's a pile of rock work on one end, a pile of mopani on the other end, plants are mostly crypts and apontogens, some java moss and a few 'other' plants. Temp: 78F, pH: 7.4, GH: don't have the exact number, but it's up there.

Any changes I will need to make for these kids? The barbs and the gouramie are my biggest concerns and will likely move to another tank--everyone else usually hides, or stays clear of any mid-level swimmers I've had in the tank. I'm not overly concerned with surviving fry--be nice, but not the goal of adding them to the tank.

I'll try getting some pics of them--hopefully someone can confirm my ID. Here's a description (of the adults, mine do not have flowing fins yet, nor as much color). About 4-5 inches, not including tail fin. Body is silvery blue-ish. Black marks between eyes and gill plate--not a straight line, broken patches with a bit of yellow in the middle. Dorsal, anal and caudal fins all have long trailing tips, edged with white. The male had more pronounced yellow and much longer fins.

do they look like this?? nice pick up.....FYI once you go cichlids you can never go back :D

Hmmm...Nope, much less red, and longer fins--the marking behind the eye is similar, though.

Yeah, I know--I'm doomed now. :D

ummm, I've never kept brichardi but have done a lot of research in the past and been close to getting some. First off, there are several tang's that look very close to brichardi, daffodil's for one and another that escapes me. the blue marks are very similar on two of the species but I believe one the marks face backwards from the other. Maybe someone at cichlid-forum.com or cichlidforums.com will have this info on the top of their head. Another thing about brichardi is they are known for taking over a tank fast. I think your plans need to be changed. Brichardi are rockdwellers and from what I've seen and been told, will shred a planted tank to bits and move all the substrate around to their liking. They are normally kept in a tank by themselves or with other tang cichlids or dithers with a rock substrate and lots of rock caves to spawn and hide. I fear your barbs and gourami will look like a sushi chef went on a rampage once your juveniles get older. Don't add them to the tank until you get this cleared by someone that has actually kept these fish and tried them in planted community tanks since I'm just going on what I've seen and read. KYle

Interesting--everything I saw indicated they typically left plants alone--that will cause a huge change!

Dang--hope they won't go after the plants. There are a few cypts in with them now, and they pecked at some algae, but nothing more. Hmmm.

Not sure how helpful this will be, but the closest I've been able to find is also called the Fairy Cichlid, or Lyretail Fairy...Maybe I have the wrong specific name?

My birchardi did not bother tough plants - vals and swords - and could not effectively dig - OE-RFUG. What they could do was kill even the pair of bristlenose sharing their tank and their (presumed) siblings once a pair was formed. That in a 33XL with lots of rockwork, serprentine stone wall (concealing the two RFUG powerheads and prefilters) from base to waterline, sword in one of the "waves", Val behind the wall and at the ends. Later moved up to a 40-long (same base but taller). Beautiful fish, form family packs, but direct descendents only. Made a showy species tank for some time. Now have leleupi in the same setup, but no potted plants, Anubias nana only.

It is possible to control Cichlid mania. Once I was basically a Cichlid nut, now I have only two Cichlid tanks - the world's ugliest Angelfish and the leleupi. So partial if not complete recovery can be accomplished.

Was a rehab facility needed? I get withdrawl symptoms when I travel through the week, and haven't even considered the idea of quitting cichlids.
Welcome OG, and get ready to buy more and bigger tanks, they really are magnetic fish in general.

No rehab needed, unless multiplication of the planted tanks in the fish room counts as a rehab facility. I did not say that I cut the number of tanks operating, just the contents. I did cut out one tank this month, so I should be pleased with myself. But I idled 3 20-longs and put a 40-long and a 30-long in their place, so had a net gain of ten nominal gallons. I wanted to drop down to 18 tanks. After 3 years of trying and re-arranging I'm down to 24 with one idle that will start up after the holidays, so I don't think I'll ever get down to 18 again. And total nominal volume is way down.
