I had a couple pumpkinseeds for a few months and they would not eat anything i offered besides nightcrawlers or leafworms! you could see me out in my back yard every few days digging up their dinner. they really did like those worms, they preferred the leafworms over the nightcrawlers though. i released the pumpkinseeds after only a couple months b/c i was tired of going out and finding them food and they were not adapting at all to prepared food.
it's like an earthworm but without the "earth" thing on them and are about 3 times the size and a pretty dark red. Best time to go for them is at night after a rainy day, with a flashlight in the back yard...

Not having a yard, I stop by a bait shop every now & then and get a package of 12 huge ones for about $2.50. This is one or two good meals for my big guys -- 2 O's, 2 Severums, TSN.

Way back, when I was mistakenly 'trying' bream for an aquarium fish, I tried earthworms for some of the bream's diet - and what a mess that was. Never again..
odd.... nightcrawlers refers to anything that's a bug that comes out at night. I believe you're referring to an earthworm, which in that case chopped earthworms is ok for certain fish.
I get it though, it's an american thing. Like crawfish, or crawdads.
