Pond

Here soon, I will be getting a Fairly large pond built in my backyard. It will have a stream like part, ending in a large body of water. What type of fish do you guys recommend? I was just thinking of koi, but I kinda want something more interesting. If I get koi then it will end up being a japanese water garden type thing (kinda cool I guess). I would like an interesting fish, that I dont have to hunt around to try and find. I was also thinking of an arrowana, but availability is pretty slim. Any suggestions? What about filters also, whats a really good filter that will keep the pond going good? As you can tell I am a newbie at ponds, sorry. Thanks for the help in advance

where you are will help decide what you can keep in there. koi are one of the best pond fish you can get, i handfeed mine everyday; kinda like puppydogs in the water. arowanas arent too hard to find even petsmart gets them in from time to time, they arent in season right now though.

I am live in Middle Georgia (u.s.a) so i mean we have pretty mild winters, not too many cold snaps..great weather for year around fish I would think.

Yeah, the thing about arowana's is that I would want more than just one fish, you know? I know that I can shoot for maybe 2, depending on how big my pond is going to be. I love koi because of they're personality, and the fact that they are always willing to come to the surface, so it might have to be them, but I was just wondering if you guys know of any cool interesting fish for a pond.

Arowana's at petsmart?! hmm kinda cool, I didn't know that, they only problem is that my petsmart isnt too extravigant on the fish part. I mean they get exotic fish every once and a while, but if you want something real good, I could talk to the manager and see if she can't order it if I would buy it.

Thanks for the help guys.

arowanas are cool with a school of tinfoilbarbs or bala sharks.

it gets too cold to keep tropicals outside year round even in san diego.
theres lots of catfish you can keep and i see koi with high fin sharks.
ive seen pictures where they would bring cichlids outside to live with koi during warmer months. or get a propane heater and you could probably keep the water temp at around 70 even in winter pretty efficiently.
you can also do natives.

So are arowans good pond fish? in terms of pond, how many gallons would I need? I hear that in order to keep more than one, its best to keep 5 or 6 to take the attention of just one or the other. I also understand that arowans need quality water, and with it being an outside pond, wouldnt it be kinda hard to maintain the water changes and stuff like you would with an aquarium.. Sorry for all the stupid questions, but I've never had a pond before, and also i feel the only stupid question is a question you dont ask. Right now I am leaning more towards koi.. but i just cant bring myself to turning down the arowana. Thanks for the help again.

ive only seen arowanas in ponds in tropical countries. you can make a huge filter and some of the algae that will grow will keep down nitrates, water changes are the same as aquariums and ive notice ponds go longer without water changes. if you get a couple arowana your going to have a pretty big food bill and since they jump its going to have to be covered; im not sure if you want that.
