I'm trying to figure out which IM is best download. They all seem the same, but I am trying to get a concensus of which one everybody prefers and why.

Thanks in advance,

My personal favourite is MSN. I have tried Yahoo and AOL, and i think MSN is supperior. It is more user friendly, a lot more features, and a lot of people have it (at least in Canada they do).

GAIM Simliar to Trillian but crashes less and takes up less space. It runs on both Windows and Linux and is completely free and open-source. You can chat with people in different languages and different type accounts (ie you can be talking from a yahoo name to a hotmail one), choose from lotsa different smileys, and it has tabbed conversations. The tabbed convos is my favourite thing, works just liked tabbed windows on Firefox so you don't have tons of windows. You can also easily change sounds without having to pay extra like AIM. GAIM is not affiliated with AOL and has no advertisements.

Edit: Guess I should include a link! http://gaim.sourceforge.net/index.php

I've been using Trillian for a whlie, and it never crashes on me. There is no less or more; it just doesn't crash on me. I'm running Trillian Pro 3.0 Alpha right now, and it's taking up less than 14MB (while signed in to AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, MSN, and Rendezvous at the same time). It really is a great client and worth the small fee. The free version is kept patched I believe, but it hasn't been actively developed for quite a while.

Yahoo to keep in touch with the BF while he's mobile, otherwise MSN (the evil empire) cuz everyone else I know uses it. Both have java/web versions so I can use it at work without downloading or installing anything.

What's with "Windows Messenger" that 'comes with' Windows XP??

Is it good???

It's very similar to MSN messenger, but less 'sophisticated' I guess you could say. Not as many smilies and features. I used it for some time after we got a new computer/before getting MSN. I like MSN alot better, but Windows M. did get the job done!

I use MSN and AOL (AIM), myself. Can't say I'm very picky- as long as it instant messenges I really don't care (lol). AIM ticks me off because they make you pay for good smilies and themes and such. MSN has (alot) more smilies, and the option of backgrounds. I enjoy staring at something I like in the background of my conversations. Hehe. And showing off pictures in your avatar is alot easier, as they're larger than AIM's. I do like the smaller AIM window- but I wouldn't appreciate that with MSN.

GAIM sounds excellent!

Yeah, I can't say enough good things about GAIM. I only downloaded the free version of Trillian and had all kinds of problems with it crashing. I do like their smileys though (they are little so they don't make the text funny), but they have smiley pack downloads on the Sourceforge page that I linked to earlier, including some nice Trilley Pro ones.

I like AIM. I used to use Dead AIM with AIM to customize it and get rid of all those add ticker things...whatever they are. I also use Yahoo, but I haven't in a while. All my family and the people I know around here are all on AOL or AIM.

Now its just plain old AIM for me.
