I am looking at making an above tank filter.

I need a pump to get water from in the tank up into the filter's reservoir.

I have a Maxi Jet 900 (230 GPH) powerhead I was thinking of using.

I was thinking of attaching it to a pipe that would stick down into the tank.

The powerhead would sit in the reservoir and pump water over into the trickle bio filter.

This would be for a 130 gallon tank.

It would work, but thats not near the gph thats "ideal" for that size tank...I personally would go no less than 5 times turnover rate....so 130g tank times 5 is 650 gph minimum.

Are you talking about running a suction line? These pumps work best if placed at the bottom (in tank) and pumping up to the filter, otherwise they won't get the rated gph. Also you'd want about 4 times/hour or better, so bigger pump maybe...

Through the filter?

I figured but I already have the powerhead.

Gotcha.

Any reccomendations then on something else besides the powerhead?

I'm trying not to put the pump in the tank to add heat to it.

without putting the pump in the tank....no ideas right now. If it were me I'd just make a sump under the tank....wait..I allready did!! Haha...yea, I like sumps, even with all the hoo haa about them over-flowing or **gasp** what about when the power goes out!!.....blah. Its never happened to me, just as long as you plan **** out and dont rush into it, usually you'll be ok. I mainly like sumps because they give me a lot of room for plants, bad critters, biologically they work well and they raise the total amount of water in the whole "system". But the pump tends to be more expensive because it has to be able to pump a good amount of water at a 4-5' height......there still my prefered method though.

FWIW

Okay.

I guess I might have to add the pump to the tank after all.
