Hello:

What would be the estimated monthly cost for using a 300 watt
heater for a 72 gallon tank under the 2 scenarios:

basement temp. 67 degrees and tank temp. 77 degrees

basement temp. 67 degrees and tank temp. 72 degrees

(use 12 cents per kilowatt)

Thanks,
Daniel

This is just an approximation, but it would be about $10 a month at 77 degrees, and $6 a month at 72.

slipknottin,

How are you figuring out how long the heater will be on and how often it will cycle on/off?

Oviously it will be cheaper to keep the tank cooler if the ambient temp is the same but how to factor in the number of minutes per hour a given heater would be on for a specific difference in room temp is beyond my understanding.

Im just guessing.

It depends alot on evaporation, how tight the tank is sealed, humididty in the room, if its glass or acrylic, how much surface water movement.. etc. etc.

Im assuming that at 77 degrees it would be on 12 hrs a day, and at 72 it would be on 6 hrs a day.

oh ok.

I was wondering if there wsa some huge mathmatical foruma for figuring out the time it took to inrcrease a given body of water X degrees above ambient temp.

I have a nice little how much does this tank cost me in electricty calculator on my site at www.aquariumadvice.com/calcs2.php

For your heater you would have to just guess the number of hours per day it would be on. But it also has spots for lights, pumps, and such.

I found my 80 gal tank has increased my electric bill by $30 per month. It used to run $60-70/mo (without the AC running) and now its more like $90-100/mo.

I am lucky as our electric rate is between 3.5-4.5 cents per killowatt

ok, i'm in the same spot, Bill WAY to high!
how do you figure out how much a heater, filter, pump, what ever is using? like on a light bulb 100w, is that 100w a hour?
I'm hoping to figure out how much my aquarium stuff is using.
I know the heaters are kind of hard, on and off all the time.
I have just sealed most of mine with custom made tops.
it helps alot! if you open the top to feed, its warm in side the top.

So i guess i'm asking how do you figure out the usage of a object?
