I've Seen Too Many Of These Lately:

BW=Brackish Water.....FW=Fresh Water.....SW=Salt Water

"What is Brackish Water?" :confused:

&

"This is way too complicated!" :confused:

Simply, BW is FW and SW mixed... FW + SW = BW

There are many degrees of the saltiness measured usually by SG, or Specific Gravity .

Example: My Figure Eight puffers need 1.005-1.008 SG

Measuring your SG is very important. Hydrometers can be used, but are much more accurate when using it for measuring the SG in SW...

Refractometers are the BEST to measure with, but I just get PetLand to test it fot me since Refractometers Cost ~$40-$300 :eek:

The only thing I would say is IMHO, brackish is not simple. There are so many variables to make it pretty complicated. Technically Brackish is where the Rivers, Lakes, Streams, etc meet the Ocean. This means that the specific gravity is constantly changing, more so than in any other water type. I have found that keeping brackish fish happy is by constantly changing their sg. But then again it also depends on what kind of fish you are keeping. Some fish like Fig 8 Puffs, BBG, Glassfish, Knight Gobies, etc like low brackish while others like GSP's, Anableps, Archers, Mudskippers, etc like moderate to strong brackish almost marine while others like Monos and Scats start their lives in freshwater, migrate to brackish and end up in saltwater. Definitely not easy imo.
I personally would rather have more topics like the aforementioned rather than people assuming what they think is right and not being right. I would also rather people post basic questions here rather than PM'ing certain members because maybe someone else has the same exact question. Plus most people here know a lot and will give lots of advice on what works for them. That is what makes this hobby. Different people with different ways that things worked for them. Remember fish don't read books so most don't act "the way they are supposed to" so there are places like this to compensate for that. Just my honest opinion. Also don't forget about the FAQ page that is stickied at the top of this forum. Great resources too. We have lots of variety to help beginners.

I agree, there are alot more people here knowledgeable than you Oddball~, no offence but you're not exactly in the top 3 for knowledge here. Don't get uppity, because you know some of your stuff well just not enough to warrant being in the top 3 here.

Gosh, that's kind of rude. I do agree about not PMing folks though. I often get asked Qs privately, that I wish folks had asked on the board, so everyone could learn.

This isn't a popularity contest.

Sorry oddball~ I didn't intend to be rude, I was just trying to simply get across that there are quite a few very knowledgeable people in this forum and it shouldn't be restricted to the opinions of only 3 people. Everyone's opinion is important and relevant to every situation.
