I'm sure everyone here has heard, and probably discussed, Peta's new argument that fish are intelligent animals and thus should not be eaten. I would like to get the aquaria enthusiasts point of view on this.

Here is mine: I love my fish, just like anyone here. I could have told peta that they are smart, that doesn't mean they shouldn't be eaten. Pigs are incredible intelligent animals, but they are still tasty. God intended for us to use animals how we need them; weather it be for clothing to keep us warm, food to fill our bellies, or friends to keep us company. Many animals do all three, despite intelligence. Fish is good for you, with a low fat content, high protein, and a good taste to boot. Give me some fancy tuna sashimi any day!

I see no hypocrisy in keeping fish as pets, and cooking them as well. Its not like keeping and eating the same animal is anything new. Peta just wants everyone to be a vegetarian, which, in my opinion, is not the healthiest way to go. My sister was a vegetarian for about 6 months two years ago. After a while she started getting very sick and weak, and found that by eating a little tuna she got better. When she stopped eating tuna, she got sick again. Oh the wondrous healing powers of fish!

I was vegan for three years. I couldn't do it. I became very sick and my doctor told me to drink protein shakes or he was going to force a steak down my throat. ha. The protein shakes made me nauscous so I started eating cheese and fish again.

I'm okay with eating fish because when it comes down to it, I'd much rather eat fish than cows. Even though I do eat steak on rare occasions. I grew up on a dairy farm; cows have giant sandpaper tongues. Fish have slimy scales.

If I could live off it, I wouldn't eat anything living...but practicality issues arise and heart disease runs in my family. Better to take the precautions than suffer later.

I would have to disagree with the good taste, its smells like cat food, no thank you. I don't eat any type of fish, I just don't like it.

Buddy, you need to find a better cook! :D Baked halibut does not taste like canned cat food, nor does it smell. A fresh caught walleye, breaded and fried? Oh, sweet fish! Wunnerful. Canned tuna has an odor, but tuna steaks, grilled with some lime juiice and wasabi, over sticky rice--yummers! Buying the good stuff and cooking it properly is not tough, nor that pricy.

Hey I can Cook Very well. I could wip up a great fish dish but since I don't eat fish and my Girlfriend doesn't eat fish it would be just a waste. Same goes with red meat too. There is nothing wrong with eating either, it just doesn't do anything for me.

Just want to point out again that the argument that vegetarianism or veganism isn't healthy isn't true. It's how you do it that matters. There are dozens and dozens of healthy, good essential protein sources in plant matter. There are probably many more meat-eating (even atkins dieters) dietarily sick people than vegans (partially because there are more of them in general), who have clogged arteries, high cholesterol, etc etc. To label one or the other as inherently unhealthy gets you nowhere. Both are healthy if done the right way, as with anything.

As for fish, no I don't eat it (I dont eat meat anyway), but I just can't stand fish. I, too, think of catfood everytime I smell it, though I do realize fresh fish has no smell. I think fish is one of those love it or hate it things. Chris has cooked fish for competitions before....so it was delicious...but even he can't eat the stuff. My cats love it though:D

My sister was a very good vegetarian. She did a lot to try and get protein. Her favorite veggie dish? Tofu nachos. Now that is a lot of protein there! Tofu, cheese, beans, a vegetarian protein delight! But I dont' know, maybe she needs more than is normal, maybe it’s because she was still growing at the time, but she did start to get sick from her diet. She has a lot of vegan/vegetarian friends, and they are all pretty thin and weak looking. Her best friend just turned vegan one day and lost 50 pounds in about three months.

I know vegetarians can be healthy, and can live a long time without meat, but some frankly look ill. I would definitely not call the atkins diet a pinnacle of healthy eating either, though. Yeah, it helped my dad lower his cholesterol quite a bit, but sorry, you need fruit/carbs too. IMO, the diet that is the healthiest is a low fat, moderate carb diet where you avoid greasy food and get your fruits and veggies. Fish was just made for this kind of diet.

well said. I agree that peta needs to get bent, honestly, if they had their way we'd all be eating tofu and living on the moon. I also agree that the "fad" diets are increadibly unhealthy and, in the long run, wont do much. You go on a crash diet and of course you lose weight, but your body "learns" and the next time you start to eat regularly your body instantly converts what it was denied into fat.

ps
havent had time to completely read this through, but it seems cool

I think I'll grill up some salmon steaks tonight.

for all those that say they know a person that went vegan and looked unhealthy becuase of it...

my brother is vegan, never eaten any animal product besides jello, and has been all his life. He looks normal and isn't sick much at all. He also has stayed away from the corn syrup that my dad and I are alergic to.

I on the other hand am only vegetarian, I eat cheese and things with eggs in them. I am on the thin side because of the alergy not being caught untill I was 6 or 7 and I didn't digest meals becuase of the corn syrup. it was also in the formula mom gave me as a baby, under doctors orders cause i wasn't gaining enough weight, and because of that still didn't gain weight like I should have.

my brother is in highschool so still eating at home. my mom cooks just about everything from scratch useing whole grain ingredients and serves lots of veggies and always has nice fruit in the house.

there are still some pretty nasty things out there that can be eaten and still be vegan, so to blaim the failure of the 'diet' on the lack of animal products is not looking at the whole picture
