I am starting a 10 gallon tank. I have five tetras and an elegant cory. I want to add at least one fancy guppy, but that will be about all my tank can take. So, I am wondering if my cory will be ok without any cory buddies to hang with. He darts in and out of the tetras occationally. I really dont want to add another cory because they get to be 2 or more inches long and thats 2 or more other fish I could have in my tank. Am I making any sense? You can tell I'm new at this cant you? :)

What kind of tetras? If they are a small variety, I think you could get both a fancy guppy and a second cory. I hope this helps. Good luck :)

They are Rosey tetras. I dont know if they are a small variety because I can find no information on them anywhere. They seemed to be about the same size as the bleeding hearts at the aquarium store, but I don't know if they or the bleeding hearts are full grown. They are not too big right now, but as my husband often points out, I can't guesstimate sizes very well, but I think they are smaller or not much more than an inch. But if I can get one fancy guppy and still have room, I don't mind the idea of getting another cory. They are awfully cute. I just want my guppy too. That is the problem. I want some of all of the fish out there but my tank just isn't big enough - yet. Oh yeah, and it is an octogon<sp?? so there is more depth than width. Maybe there is not room for two corys on a small aquarium floor??

I've noticed that cory cats are much happier and healthier when they have at least one other cory in the tank with them. I know I had just one cory in my 29 gallon, and when I bought my panda cory, my emerald when wild. Constantly hanging out with the panda and I was seeing what I would call playing. They really enjoyed each others attention. So, my suggestion is to nix the guppy and get another cory. If you think you can get both(another cory and a guppy). But, my opinion is that cories really like the company of other cories. But, that's up to you of what you want to do.

Hope I helped a bit

That whole inch per gallon thing si not necessarily true as long as you have a good filter, and good airation, and keep on top of your water changes you should be fine. I would get another Cory and a couple fancy guppies too.
Get them all you`ll be fine.

Thanks everybody for your advice. I think I do have a good filter with good aration. So I will just slowly add a couple of more and see what my tank can take. (It seems like all of the rules - inch per gallon, how much to feed, how long to leave the light on - are dependent on each situation and not really rules at all)
