I'm hoping to start up a little ~5g tank in my office at work, in the new year. I'd like to go bigger, but space is a limiting factor, and I don't know if anything bigger would go over well with my 'superiors' lol.

So, I've been looking at Eclipse systems and All-glass mini-bow 5g kits. I'd like to have it planted fairly heavily, but no CO2 (less 'stuff' on my desk). I think both of the kits come with lights, the All-glass has a 15W incandescent that I can swap a compact fluorescent into. Also walmart has a 5.5g kit for pretty cheap that I can upgrade, etc.

Stocking, not sure yet. Since its a little tank, my options are VERY limited. Off the top of my head, a betta and a couple otos would work. Does anyone have other ideas? Things to keep in mind while I'm shopping/surfing/looking for equipment?

Thanks in advance :D

Nano reef maybe.

Ummm as much as I'd a little reef, money, availability of rock, fish, and other marine stuff is wayyy beyond what I can support. I'm trying to do things as cheaply and simply as possible. :D Yet still look nice, lol.

I'll add this: freshwater only suggestions please :)

what about a thin layer of sand & 2 khuli loaches?

khulis playing in the sand can be very hypnotizing

I'm considering a similar set-up for my desk. I'm going with the old tried and true cliche: a male betta, with a couple of Otos for algae control.

A pair of honey gouramis would be really pretty.

geoff, I thought kuhlies needed a bigger tank..? I really like the idea though :)

I've been looking through some older threads, african dwarf frogs would be cool, as would a dwarf gourami. I'm a little hesitant to have ADFs at work, I'm not sure how my coworkers would react to having frozen bloodworms in the community freezer and thawing on my desk, lol.

i guess now you can count me as yet another member of the "dark side"; i was dissapointed to see this;). At any rate, you could go my route and get a mantis shrimp setup, its only cost me 40bucks so far (for rocks, sand, tank, "powerhead" which is actually just an old HOB filter without the media, and marine salt). The mantis is only gonna run me back about $20. The part where it really starts getting expensive is when i add the coral in a few months (my lfs sells a polyp frag rock for like $35, a mushroom frag isnt much less). You dont have to buy a lot of LR or LS: it will take a bit longer but im just gonna get like 5lbs and wait for the LR to transfer over to the regular lace rock i have (about 8lbs of lace only cost me $8). Total cost is gonna run me back about $80:D (minus that darn coral :()

At any rate, to get back to what you actually want to hear. I've never liked bettas much, but i suppose a really red betta would look good with some black gravel, some slate and maybe some small driftwood. For plants id go with wisteria, dwarf sagg, and maybe some anacharis; they're all easy to grow. Getting a few ottos or some snails is a goodidea, algae is a big issue in my DP 5gal (those little buggers eat all the snails).

or you could go the common route and get about 12goldfish and a few CAEs ;)

actually I was thinking of getting an oscar, a RTBS, a clown loach and a goldfish.

j/k *ducks*

more seriously, I'm leaning towards a froggy only tank. 4 ADFs, some easy plants, sand and maybe a snail.

I'd love to go SW, but when I do, its gonna be BIG, none of this dinky nano business ;) and sure as heck won't be in my current apartment, I'm planning on moving in 8-9 months anyways. So I shall continue to drool from afar. When I arrive in and settle into Calgary, I've heard there is a kick-a$$ SW store, so I'll be armed with my trusty visa card :D but I digress...

back to work I go...
