I noticed the past couple of days that something just didn't look right in my Discus tank- nothing I could really put my finger on but it just felt different. So today I'm scrutinizing around testing all the intakes for flow etc and see about 50 little baby Discus on the heater and filter intake tube. They are doomed. I have no aspirations towards raising fish- why pour my heart into them for six months only to sell them to an evil LFS??

But it is still sad seeing them clinging there without a hope in heck of surviving. Just two hours later and there are maybe 20 left- I don't know whether they are getting eaten or just coming loose and then getting eaten. I have no idea when the eggs were laid or how long they have been hatched. The parents are standing guard but do not appear particularly agitated nor do they try and run off interlopers.

Short circle of life for these poor unfortunate babies.

Its impressive that you have a breeding pair of discus. Are they both blue diamonds? I bet you could get a good price for them on aquabid. I'm sure that someone would be intereseted in breeding them.

We didn't think we would have a spawning pair either - with only the eight Discus we have. It is good to know yours have hatched. We had (so far) around 12 batches of eggs that didn't hatch. It's for the best since we don't have the "equipment" to raise the fry. Also, there are no LFS here that could attempt to keep baby Discus.

The only thing I can think of to maybe help is to print out those pics and post them at LFS (if they let you..). Then "offer" them up to a "good home"... Other than that...? ?

Oh - if they all are blue and around the same size, good luck on finding the same pair when they are done. You may need to net them out and sell them for $$ ... ;)

That's a rough one, Toni. The only breeders I've had are the dang kuhli loaches, and I know that if I wanted them to breed, they'd stop immediately. Still, it's good to know you're providing a good home for the parents. :)

man, cearbhill you could get so much for those babies if you had the resources to grow them out. Seeing your pics makes me want to turn my SW tank into a discus tank ASAP.
