Ok. Here's a quick run down.
I head into work this morning, already peeved off because of the snowy weather and the fact that most Quebecers forget that we have snow on the ground for 4 months of the year and get stupid while driving during the first snowfall of every year.
Anyhoo.
Arrive at work to find a new visitor in one of the tanks on the system we colorfully refer to as "the sewer" Just because it usually holds the fish that are livefeeders and nasty predators. IE snakeheads etc...
The new fellow is a very colorful piranha. Just a regular old red belly about 5 inches but very very colorful.
Now we are gearing up for our big x-mas sales and are limited in tank space right now so to waste a 32 gallon tank on one fish is a little ridiculous. Especially when we have to move 6 fish to make room for this fellow.
I go and ask one of the other fishroom fellows what the deal is with the piranha.
This is what he tells me.
Yesterday (my day off) some fool calls and says he has a red belly. The fellow is told that normally yes we would take it but because of the current situation sorry we can't. He then recommends to the customer to call one of the many other pet stores in the area. One of them will certainly take the fish.
All is forgotten at that point. Yesterday was kind of slow and the dry goods manager remembers 4 young fellows (around 18 by her estimate) come into the store and only spend a few minutes in the fish room before leaving.
At this point because of a large shipment that had arrived only one person was in the fish room working. Everyone else was out doing other things and The dry goods manager was minding the cash.
Someone else (a regular) came in for feeders. The fish room employee was getting feeders when he noticed a 5 inch piranha in the feeder pond.
See the problem was not the fact that the fish was in the pond. The problem was that the pond is on a constant overflow system and the water was 48 degrees. The piranha was a mess on the bottm unable to move and presumably dead. he was netted out and placed into another tank in the sewer. The other fish were removed. At this point the fish was so messed up that they thought that it was dead. After about 15 minutes it moved a little and 30 minutes later it was on it's side but alive.
So basically what we think happened is that these jokers thought that they would get a thrill or maybe get even with us for not taking the fish. You know "HAHA drop it in the feeders and watch it kill everything" What they didn't know was the temp of the water. So when they dropped the fish in and it sunk like a stone they hauled a$$ out of the store.
IDIOTS!
Anyway the fish was eating today and is now on sale for $24.99.
I told the fish room guys that if they see these guys again to point them out. I will then explain to them that if they want to try it again, be sure to use a black piranha because we will get more money for them because they sell for around $60.
Some people really just do deserve a slap sometimes.
