Everyone gets algea, but it seems that I get it more than anyone else. What can I do to control this? As you may be able to tell, I'm pretty new to this, but I do know that algea can be very bad if you let it get out of control. Please respond!
The algae busting sticky in the plants forum is a great place to start. There's a link in there to an algae overview on plantgeek.net that will help you identify the specific algae with which you have a problem.
Sorry you're having algae problems. As stated, water changes will help - as long as your tap water doesn't have high nitrates/phosphates. If the tank is exposed to any sunlight at all, you may also get algae blooms.
BTW, what a nice tank!
You could also toss in some easy to grow low light plants to suck up some of the extra nutrients and compete with the algae. Java moss and Java ferns are two common examples of plants that will serve the purpose. Also, try feeding your fish less. Overfeeding is a common source of the extra nutrients that algae thrive on.
I hate algae! Me and my boyfriend have had our fair share of algae let me tell you. If it's brown algae-a brown common pleco should do the trick. If it's string algae or green-try siamese algae eaters. They are great! Do NOT get chinese algae eaters! They are mean and don't do as good as of a job. Do you have plants? That throws things off. Also if you have too much light that causes a break out of algae. Hope this helps.
Watch out for the common pleco though as it gets to be 18 inches long. Also plecos can end up creating a ton of waste, which in turn can become food for algae and if the water and tank aren't kept super clean then your algae problems could actually get worse.
