The importance of watching your fish

Yesterday morning, got a coffee and did my usual check up on my fish in my 2 aquariums. My Angel had a funny, kinda fuzzy little spot at the bottom edge of his tail fin. Didn't know what it was, so I just imagined it was probably nothing to worry about.

WRONG !

When dinner time came, I noticed that he was not acting as usual. Looking at him closely, already 2mm of fin were GONE! :eek: Red alert ! Red alert !!! Fin rot was eating my fish. Took a couple of minutes to find a cure on the net and it worked wonders. 1 gal of water + 3 teaspoon of salt, drop the fish in for 30 to 40 minutes and bingo. All cured ! :)

Just goes to show you how every little detail is important and I learned that I should have check up on him more often during the day. Probably would have saved the poor fella 1mm of fin. That will teach me.

Phew! Thank goodness you caught it. This goes without saying, but keep an eye on everyone for the next few days to make sure you don't get an outbreak. I'd do a water change as well, just to ensure the environment's nice and clean.

I think that even on the busiest day it's important to spend a minute in front of the tank - I count the fish, check for injury or illness, check how the plants are doing, make sure there's nothing clogging the filter intake and the CO2 is bubbling away. It's a routine I barely think about, and it gives me peace of mind :)

I cleaned the tank glass today and the filter media but I did not do a water change... just might do it now. Good idea.

Yeah, thank gawd. I couldn't believe how fast that fungus ate at my fish tail fin. I'll go check on them again.

amen to that
i had a new paroon shark and saw there where small white dots on him(ick which i had no clue) but i was to new to kno what they were so i just neglected the them . by the time i treated him he couldnt make it

that sounds like a hasty decision.
How do you know the fin wasn't nipped or it hadn't rubbed up on something the wrong way which caused some abrasion? 2mm is barely a speck.
How do you know you cured it in 30 minutes?

I guess I take a bit of a laid back approach to the hobby...I think I do everything that people recommend against, yet I never get any fish ailments.
 
I know not everyone agrees, but I find I have to keep salt in the tank at all times. We're in tropical australia and without salt in the tank you are certain to get a fungus outbreak. Over the years I have just found it easier and better for the fish to keep the salt in the tank. Not everyone may need this, but I feel that we do here at least...
