I hate having to unplug my Aqua-clear filters when I do a water change cuz often they won't start up again when I plug them in. Usually when that happens (pretty much every second time I do a water change) I clean the entire filter housing and I remove the motor so I can clean the impeller and I take a q-tip and get any gunk out from inside where the impeller sits.

Well this morning I did a water change on my 65 gallon and no matter how much I cleaned the motor out it just won't start again.

move the siphon tube out of the way, and tap the impeller with a screwdriver or similar shaped device. Once its spinning, put the siphon tube back on and you should be good to go.

All of which typify why I've given up on ACs. These things are the biggest pain to get restarted. It's the same thing after every water change...

totally agree with slipknottin

move the intake pipe out of the way to expose the impeller in its housing. i just tap it with they back of a plastic feeding spoon that i have and it starts right up. also make sure that there is water in the housing so it doesn't start up dry. once it goes, there are no problems at all.. i think the ac 300 is great..

So that wasn't terribly helpful  What filter have you decided is better than the AC's and is it a filter where you can alway have an extra cycled sponge available when you are inclined to set up a new tank?!?!? That part is very important to me and that is why I really like the AC's.

I love AC filters as well but I'm wondering, did you really read my post?!?!?!
I took the entire housing apart and cleaned it until the cows came home and still the darn thing won't start. I always put a lot of water into the filter housing before attempting to start the filter but it still would not start.
:sad

I offered my feedback, not to be a smart@ss, but to commiserate. I know how frustrating it is to try to get an AC to run again.

I run all my Emperors and Penguins with sponges instead of cartridges. They pretty much always start up after water changes, power outages, etc. The sponges are available for other tanks if I need to jump start a biofilter.

Oh I hope I didn't upset you. I didn't think you were being a smart@ss at all. I'm sorry if you got that impression from me.

How do you run a Penguin filter with sponges?? What kind of sponges do you use and where do you put them????? I have a Pengiun 100 but can't figure out where to put a sponge?

I do apologize if I offended you in any way. That was certainly not my intention.

I do as well. With power outages as frequently as we have them here, I cant deal with a filter thats been off all day while Im not home because of a 2 minute power outage.

I also am a big fan of the penguin/emperors's one piece construction. Ive had a few ACs leak through the motor mounts.
