The other day I tried to use my gravel vac that sucks and it of course stirred up a bunch of junk which I had to remove w/the net. Since then I notices that he has a small round, white speck of something in his front fins (the little ones that he swims with). I is very tiny like the head of a pin but it is white so I can see it.

What do you suppose it is? Just something stuck there or bacteria or what. Sorry can't send a picture as dont have a digital camera or computer that will.

Any help would be great!!!
Thanks

does it look like a grain of salt

it could possibly be white spot or ich

my sons betta got white spot but only ever had the one spot which we treated and cured

watch it and see if it moves at all in case it is a piece of debris but dont leave it too long

waht are your water parameters

because water quality is a big factor in getting rid of white spot successfully IMO

maybe worth doing more water changing to be on the safe side with gravel vac and if that spot falls off do a good gravel vac as soon as you can

one spot is hard for me as i have only 2 experiences with ich so i dont know whether to advise immediate treatment

i will leave that to the experts

Looks like a grain of salt. It is only one spot on one fin. I can't seem to find a site w/pics of fish diseases to know for sure. My tanks is 2 1/2g, the ammonia was up to between 1 & 2, I did a 50% water change and now it is down to approx .75. Should I do another? Does ich just show up like that all of a sudden? He had some stuff on his back tail fin but it fell off that is why I thought this was just gunk but it is still there and I am concerned.

I also heard that salt can clear it up, how did you do it? I sure wish he was like a dog you could just turn over and look at it and if it is gunk just pick it off.

Thanks again

Thanks mayreee, I was hoping it wasn't because I have been so dilegent about the levels & such as of course I knew nothing about cycling.

Anyway the only salt I have now is Morton's table salt. It has salt and calcium silicate listed as ingrediants. I know you have to use a certain kind. I also don't have a heater as the tank is so small. Don't know if simply leaving the light on all night will do the trick, I doubt it.

Do I need to run now to Petco to p/u salt & the small heater they have or is there anything else to do, either now or at least til the am?
Thanks again!

i dont know about your salt

but i would definately get the heater as raisng the temperature slowly up to 86 will help speed up the life cycle of the parasite

keeping the light on continually will probably add to the stresses the fish is having at the moment

and as i said continue to waterchnage and gravel vac through the medication this will increase the chances of catching the ich while it is in the gravel before it hatches into frr swimming stage although once it is, if the salt has been added this is the only vulnerable stage

i used meds the second time round as i had no luck with salt due i believe now to the fact that neons are delicate anyway and i was cycling too

next time if it happens again i will try salt again

good luck

all salt works fine!. I jump between table and aquarium salt frequently and neither really bother my fish.
raising the temperature to low 80s is not a mandatory requirement; it simply accelerates the life cycle of ick. basically, you can keep the temperature the same, but you'll need to do more water changes (with salt in the new water) for a longer period of time. I've always put salt in my tank and have been fortunate enough to never get any real disease outbreak.
