I just found several more references. These precisely and directly support my contentions about water column being the source of nutrients when adequate concentration is present there. I also have a personal communication with the top person on molecular aquatic plant research in the Western hemisphere noting this same conclusion.
I've been poo pooed for years about this. I found one really good reference sometime ago, well, there's more.

I'm going to take a guess here. But unless your substrate is impenetrable then good circulation and vacuuming would enrich the substrate from the water column. Is this correct? I'm starting to dose fairly heavy and use eco-complete so I don't see what substrate ferts would gain for me.

If you look at flow charatecters for 2-3 mm sized gravel, the flow rate is roughly 0.5 liters/day/m^2.
Plenty for algae.
No cables needed.
