I bought this plant at a tiny LFS - it was sickly looking, but had nice white roots and I figured all it needed was a little TLC. A couple weeks later, it's finally taking off and putting out nice healthy leaves. It was sold without any label, and looked a lot different when I bought it. Can anyone tell me if this is Egeria densa? Thanks :D

its not densa, that I know. it could be a hygrophila species as that seems to be the most common of the plants that look like that.

drawing of egeria here

your plant possibly this

I would like to question why you want egeria densa. it is a cold water plant that doesn't do well in the tropical temps that most of the other plants that we keep in aquariums like.

rare though it is Egeria najas is better suited to aquarium culture because it grows better in warmer water than densa does.

Blinky,

I have rotala indica plants and the one pictured there looks just like rotala to me. What kind of lighting do you have? Because in medium to high light when this plant starts to reach the surface of the tank it turns to a different color from green to an orange pink color (sometimes a peach color). It's a beautiful plant when planted in bunches and it grows very well without special care IME. In low light it stays green, but it still grows.

HTH

Thanks for the replies guys:)

SnakeIce - I don't actually want pondweed, I was hoping it was something else - I walked into the shop on a whim and saw this little plant; I thought it was (or rather, had the potential to be) pretty and would look nice in my tank. I'm fairly new to plants and while I can recognize many on sight, this one wasn't something I'd seen before. The guy knew it was in lousy shape, he gave it to me for almost nothing because he was certain it would die. I thought for $2 I'd give it a shot, and it seems to be working out :D

In the store it had very small (1/4" or so) leaves that were a plain green, and now it's producing 1/2" leaves that are light green and pinkish - a very attractive colour that contrasts well with the other plants. The picture isn't very good, I was hoping it would be sufficient for someone to recognize the shape more than the colour.

Aquabum - I've got 110W 9325K CF and 60W 6500K T12 fluorescent lighting on the tank (65g). It's not exactly high light, but so far everything including the new plants are doing really well.

[edit] I did some searching online, and it's almost certainly Rotala rotundifolia (indica). It's not in my plant encyclopedia, thanks for helping me ID it! [/edit]

Your welcome.

I thought it looked familiar. In your type of light, it will grow real nice. The colors are amazing, I remembered that I had a couple that turned a hot pink. :)

P.S. Here are pictures of the rotala plants that I have.

Sure did! I've been looking for some reasonable rotala in the GTA. Used to have some a while ago and loved it. Your lighting is quite strong so you shouldn't have any problems there.

Mind if I ask what store you got it at? Also if you have any extras eventually please keep me in mind.

I don't mind at all!
I got it at a little shop called Aqua Tropics - it's at Keele and Dundas. I don't go there very often, so I don't know if this is something he regularly stocks.
The plants were in dim, dirty tanks and looked like they were on their last legs. The owner didn't want to sell them because they were in such bad shape, so I offered half the asking price of $3.99 and ended up getting two plants for $4. You never know, you might find more there - he had a lot, and this was less than a month ago.
If mine goes crazy and I have lots to spare I'll let you know - I'm always throwing away plants, I'd love to send some cuttings to a good home :D

Blinky,

When they are completely grown, you can even mix them with other plants. I mix mine with sunset hygro and the l. repens, and they look really nice. Not too many though, so as to not shade the other plants, but a couple just to create a beautiful aquascape.

Believe me, you'll be prunning this plant in no time.

Lissette :p
