Drift wood

got my first piece of drift, however i know this is going to sound stupid..

i can't seem to keep it down at the bottom of the tank, i know its called drift wood for a reason, but i see pretty cool pics with them down on the bottom, i was thing about creating a hit/cave type deal with it. it did however come attached to some gray square piece at the bottom which i can't remove, i suppost this was to hold it down?


i put alot of gravel around it but it still pops up.

any ideas???

You have to let it soak, so it would get filled with water and sink to the bottom, which takes some time.. depending on how big it is. :)

Try putting some rocks on it. They don't have to be really heavy, just heavy enough to keep it down. Once it gets water logged you can remove the rocks if you wish or leave them if you like. This will take some time but will do the same as soaking prior. All you have to deal with is the potential eyesore it might be for a while.

If the piece is small enough boil it. If not take a large gallonage bucket and let it soak, holding it down with large clean rocks, For a few weeks at least, until it sinks by itself, at least with the slate. And yes thats what the slate is for(pile gravel around it).

even if it is big dump boiling water on it. let it sit for several hours till cooled to RT and repeat several times. This worked really well for me.

you could also hook a bunch of fishing sinkers to the wood until it sinks; then you could call your tank a "north american lake biotype"!!! Throw in some broken glass, old beer cans and some old tires for good measure!

Weight it down with a rock or something, it'll take weeks if not months (i had one wood that really take months to sink) for it to sink by itself.
