Hi guys. One of my platies seems to have been injured somehow and I think he's developed some kind of fungus. Or, he has some fungus and now it's destroying his scales. He's eating and swimming, but it doesn't seem to get any better or worse. He's been like this for about 3 or 4 weeks now. I don't have another tank, and I don't want to treat anything in the tank. I can move him to a little 1-gal temporarily, if really needed. The others arent bothering him and they don't show any symptoms.
The fungus isn't really fluffy or anything, it just makes him look a little white all over, especially the base of his tailfin. (Note that he really is white there and black over parts of his body, that's his natural colouring. His colouring makes him appear sicker, but he really is splotchy like that.)
So I'm wondering if this will ever heal by itself?
Here are some pics, but they're on ImageStation so may not show up

Sounds to me like you have a bacterial infection, but I can't say for sure. I'd recommend highly that you *at least* treat the tank, if not quarantine him and treat *both*. I'd start with melafix per instructions for a week. If no luck, do a 50% water change and then use primafix (which treats true fungus issues). This should take care of the problem.

If you don't have any plants or catfish in the tank, add a teaspoon or three of salt per 5 gallons of water. Platys and other livebearers are usually found in brackish water in nature, but are quite adaptable.
