I've been feeding them tropical flakes, and the other fish in my tank swim right up to the top and eat them from the surface. A few flakes filter down through the water, and occasionally one of the neons will take a tiny bite but other than that they seem uninterested, and they will not swim to the top to eat. Am I feeding them the wrong thing, or going about feeding them wrong? I don't want to starve them. :(

Likely your neons are wild-caught, and they often don't get the point when it comes to flake food, at least for a while.

First, test your water for pH (should be 6.0-7.0 for neons), ammonia (0), nitrite (0), hardness (1-7 DH for neons). Anything other than these readings may make life hard on neons.

Stop by the local fish store and buy some frozen daphnia or brine shrimp (preferably the daphnia). Neons usually respond better to meaty smelling stuff than cornflake looking fish food.

Be SURE that you are not feeding them to the point that there is fish food sittin on the bottom and not getting eaten immediately. This will quickly pollute your tank. Remember that everything you put in the water, basically, stays there in some form or another....
