Can any of the commonly kept brackish fish (other than scats) be kept in a saltwater tank, namely, the small puffers and gobies? I'd love to put a couple of bumblebee gobies in my nano.

I view bbgobies as closer to fresh than brackish. But yea many brackish can be acculmiated to marine, I not the one to ask though. Monos maybe? As you probabily fig.ed out many fish start fresh/ brackish then eventually move to marine as they mature.( egscats). Try asking OrionGirl she's got the skills.

I am pretty sure that many brackish fish migrate to full salt water in their adult life. I know there are some puffers that do. But you will need to acclimate them very slowly. Even mollies will tolerate full salt water.

Monos are the same as scats, they migrate to SW as adults. I've got 5 mono argentus in sg 1.021 right now with a green spotted puffer in my 135g.

Scats = ok
Monos = ok
Columbian Cat shark = ok
Green spotted puffer= ok
Ceylon Puffer= ok
There's more but my mind is drawing blanks at 1 in the morning.

BB gobies definately can't handle full strength SW though, 1.008 is the max I'd go with BB gobies.

Come on cdawson, you can't think at 1am? Just kidding. Actually good list. I too have 4 Mono Sebaes in full saltwater (they are still juvies and are in my 55g) and also have 1 Mono argenteus in a seperate tank. Some additional fish that can go full salt are Mollies, Guppies, Anableps, Mudskippers, Archers, Figure 8 Puffers. Monos and Scats actually require saltwater as adults so those are some great fish. Definitely don't do Bumblebee gobies. Why don't you look into some of the small saltwater gobies? There are lots and some that resemble the BB's. Same with the Puffers. The Canthigaster puffers are quite spectacular. Anyway, hope this helps and good luck!

Thanks all.

My main interest in the brackish fish (mainly bb gobies and small puffers) was the small size. There aren't many puffers for under $30 that stay small. That, and bb gobies are just too cool.

I would not take bumblebee gobies to full salt. Nor would I take Tetraodon biocellatus (Figure 8 puffer) to full salt - for me they live longer and hold their color quite well in light brackish (specific gravity 1.005-1.008).
