I really want a piece of driftwood in my tank, they look great and the fish seem to love it, and I know that driftwood lowers pH. It lowers the pH because of all the garbage and acidic substances it releases (at least I think that is the reason?) and I am just wondering if it actually stops having that effect after say a year or so (by perhaps washing all of that stuff out)?

Usually the buffering abilities will wear out after some time.
Also, all driftwood doesnt alter pH, and it will usually say it on the tag.

That is great to hear, this is not exactly a store bought driftwood that I have a tag for, a piece that I found. Just washed it it today and soaked it in warm water for about an hour for the yellowish water to wear off a little. Boiling it for two hours now, and thinking of going with another few hours (changing the boiling water every hour or two).
Trying to accomplish this wearing off deal in a matter of day.. I got no patience at all, heh. Will keep boiling it until I see that the water is clear.
