Should I add a male or female Gourami?

Ok, I wrote earlier about my Dwarf Neon Gourami not eating well and it was suggested I get him a friend. At this time I would really only want to add one. Looking on advise if I should add a male or female. I don't really care if they breed or not.

How large is the tank? Gouramis are territorial, and if there's not enough space adding another may not be a good idea.
Just a thought, if your fish isn't eating well, you could try feeding him (thawed) frozen bloodworms or other live food :)

The tank is a 37 Gallon tall. I have 2 large lyretail swordfish, 3 lemon tetras, 3 marble mollys, a couple of blue apple snails and the dwarf neon gourami. I have hornwort on one side (weighed it down under an edge of slate) and the Gourami loves it but doesn't spend much time there anymore, mostly swims in the open area.
Earlier I threw in some skinned peas and all the fish went nuts eating it except the Gourami who was in the middle of it all looking pretty clueless! One the other hand he never seems bothered by the other fish activity.

Personally, I'd let the gourami be the only territorial fish in the tank - I tried keeping an angel and a betta in my 45g and even that wasn't enough room for them to feel they each had enough of a territory (the betta shredded the poor angel to bits and I had to remove him to another tank).
That's just how I'd do it, based on personal experience; I know others here have successfully kept multiple territorial fish in smaller spaces with no trouble at all. :)
