View Full Version : jellybean parrot fish?
i was at the lfs today with my girlfriend and she just fell in love with a blue jellybean parrot cichlid. she wants one so bad, but cannot in her apartment. i will have a vacant 40 gal breeder here in about 2 weeks and was wondering what you all think of them. would they be halfway cool to have. i hear they are a hybrid convict\parrot, with a max size of about 5 inches. i would like to get them for her (well kind of, i'll have to take care of them), but not if they are supper lame. let me know, thanks.

I Have Seen Them In My LFS To.
They Look Cool But They Are Dyed That Color So In A Couple Of Months There Color Will Start To Fade.
Ooh And You Can't Breed Them Because The Males Are Infertile.
How Much Were They Charging For Them?

The parrot fish is a facinating fish and if you are getting them for 6 bucks then it is a steal. As someone has mentioned they are put through a dying process which is opinioned by many as a cruel process. As a note the blue, pink, yellow, etc will not last forever. The fish will eventually turn orange similar to a gigantic gold fish. This species can be somewhat aggressive so be careful what you put into your tank with them. If all added together they are usually fine but after that they become territorial. I recommend that you buy them in pairs. In fact I lucked out and got a male and female and have had many succesful fry. In most stores they sell for around 12-18 dollars a piece with a pair around 30. Good luck.

maybe i was wrong about the price...i thought they were like $6, but now you are all making me think twice. i have a 40 gal tank (36"L16"W). how many could i stick in there? a pair would probably be good? maybe with another pair of cons? or would that be pushing it?

When my wife had to have the parrots I had just cycles a 55 gal and put it in with (2) blue flame tetra's, A tinfoil (Eventually had to move him he got to be about 10 inches), Red Tail Shark and several small forms of tetras etc. I planted the tank which they liked to eat all of the plants and would even pull the other ornaments up. They are egg layers so if you get a male and female (With a lot of luck) and they move the gravel etc to build a nest or hide you may have fry on the way. The parrot is a Chiclid so you may want to do some form of rocks/cave setup to give them places to hide. It is not uncommon for them to hide for several days or be shy for weeks once you put them into a new tank. Good luck.

A 40gal would be ok for a single pair and a few dithers and bottom feeders.
PLEASE PLEASE avoid the dyed ones as buying them only adds to the demand of this cruel process.

I'm confused...are we talking parrot cichlids (Hoplarchus Psittacus), or those hideous, man-made blood parrots?

Jellybeans and Blood Parrots are two different fish. A jellybean is a Convict and a Blood Parrot mix. If it was blue it WAS DYED. I suggest you research the process if dying fish. Very cruel.

I have three jeely beans not sure if there males or female.I know i have eggs millions lol but i had them befor i guess i dont have a male or im not doing something right do you have to do anything didfrent than other for them to hach out? i have a jeely bean that weights 2 pound i was offerd a 150 dollares for it but i didnt want to sell him i had him for 4 years so can u haelp me out

I agree with the fact that the man-made blood parrots are hideous. I wouldn't purchase them at all. I guess I like fish that are a little more natural, and that don't look like an ax hit them right behind the head.
