My 10 gallon planted is about to become home to the male betta we have had for years. There is also a little gold fish my sister brought home from a carnival on Halloween that needs a home as well. I know that the betta thrives in temperatures higher than a goldfish prefers so the match is not ideal. but a gold fish also needs more than 1/2 a gallon of water to swim, which is what he has right now.

Even though I am aware that the match is not the best: will it work? both fish need more room, and I would rather sacrifice a little temperature than sacrifice a lot of room. Is it possible for them to get along in the 10 gallon?

From what I hear bettas can't be put with anything that they would mistake as another betta. Anything with long fins. I heard not even guppies. I wouldn't put anything with my bettas, of that nature, since I see how they flip out over mirrors.

And the temperature thing, I think that is not very good at all. Sorry I can offer no scientific info besides organisms are evolved to live under certain conditions and messing with that is going to shorten their life. I know my bettas are very unhappy with colder water (72 degrees) and they become very lethargic. I have also kept goldfish but never put them in a tropical tank.

A betta will do fine in something over a gallon (gallon jars are in the grocery stores). If you don't want to give his house to the other fish, then there are affordable 2.5 tanks in many places.

finally if you want some more betta advice and don't know of this site already:

good luck

more space for the goldfish is best. If you have too put the betta in the 1/2 gallon. Keep bettas above 74, goldfish below76. You wont know if you can keep them together untill you try, you'll find out right away.

I dont' care as much for the goldfish as I do for the betta. The betta has been with us for 2 1/2 years now and has never had a home over 2 gallons. I really want to give him more space. The goldfish I am not as sympathetic to.

I suppose I could set the temp at 75 and see how they get along. The goldfish is just a feeder fish, and doesn't have the long fins of a fancy goldfish.

The problem is that goldfish produce a lot of waste. So it menas you will probably be having to do large volumn water chanegs twice a week or else the mere pressence of the goldfish can hurt your betta.

Anyone want a goldfish?

I am seriously tired of this thing.

maybe your LFS will take the goldie? I agree, I am sick of my goldfish, somone can have him!

Can't the goldfish go in a bowl?

As far as I was told at the petstore, all goldfish prefer cold water so I don't see why you'd need a tank for it. I was told this because I was asking what types of goldfish I could put in our pond with our koi. The sales guy could have been totally wrong but I would hope he'd know. Plus, if the goldfish in question was won at a carnival, it was probably in a tiny bowl there so I don't think a one gallon bowl would be a problem. Maybe I'm wrong but my koi and comets outside are still alive and it's FREEZING here in Illinois. I remember as a kid having a goldfish in a bowl and he lived a long while. I imagine if he died, you could replace him pretty easy....
