Would styrofoam be a good material for padding the top of a tank stand for a rather large tank (72" x 24" x 30")? I was looking at some 1" thick slabs of extra-strength polystyrene:
"This foam is extremely rigid and the most resistant to compression. Ideal for use as a roof and wall insulation. Can be used indoors and outdoors, however it may change color in sunlight. Can also be used below ground. Install with roofing nails or a solvent-free adhesive."
Alternatively I could get some 3/4" slabs of the regular styrofoam, but it seems like that might crush very easily.

Alternate material suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for the advice.

I use 1/2" pink insulation foam - my tank weighs ~700lbs when filled, I'm not sure how large your tank is or how much weight styrofoam can support before it will compress/break. You could try calling the company, they may have statistics, you never know.

you dont need much, the thick stuff could be unstable if its getting crushed down. i would get really thin sheets its just incase the stand isnt perfectly level or theres bumps in it. i even just used cardboard before on smaller sized tanks though.
