This is my new 55 setup. I'm not done with it yet, but I'd like some opinions on what's in there so far. I know the little "colliseum" thing doesn't really go, but it's the one thing I let my girlfriend pick out, so I feel bad takin it out.
What kind of fish are you planning to get? Hope you don't pick the one that like to dig. What kind of plant is it in the background? They look like they are all plastic plants? are they?
The plants in the background are fake. They aren't plastic, feel like fabric or somethin. Plan on puttin in angels, silver dollars, cories, and rams/apistos.
I like the silk plants, they're nice. The sand is also very attractive. I think the root structure would look better off to one side or the other, rather than in the middle. Putting something imposing/eye-catching dead centre tends to make things look unnaturally symmetrical; the human eye prefers things in thirds.
That's a nice looking set-up, hoamskilet. Your tank looks very "sanitized" at the moment. For me, I've always loved that "old" aquarium feel, where the decor like rocks and driftwood are carpeted in algae, live plants are growing wild, and accessories like heaters and filter intakes are covered in wavy beard algae. I've always loved that particular tree root decor. I've seen it around at different shops. Next time I do a set up, I think I'll pick one up.
I agree with Blinky...I think your tall structures should be placed off to the sides. And you're right, you got to keep the coliseum decor in so you can stay out of the doghouse.
The sand is pool filter sand. I love how it looks and the best part....CHEAP!! Cost me less than five bucks. I really like the bell too and I think my fish are gonna like it as well....picked it up at my LFS. I normally completely agree with keepin the tall stuff to the side, but that's how it started out and it actually looks better with the tree root in the middle. Every person that has seen the previous pics with it on the side has agreed that it looks better how it is now. Thanks for the compliments everyone.
Pool Filter sand is the best, isn't it? I bought two 50 pound bags for around ten bucks and only needed one for my 29. I am using real plants in mine, but 50 pounds was more than enough substrate.
As for your tank; I'll agree that anything in the middle of a tank is jolting to my eye. Even moving it a little off center will improve it. i usually like to leave the middle open for swimming, myself and have the sides with something that attracts the eye.
