I thought he was just taking naps, but now he's spending 99% of the day on the floor of the tank sleeping. I can't bear to see him like this. I'd had him for 2 weeks, and he was veyr active. I dropped a sinking pellet in the tank to be sure he was getting enough food. I noticed his tummy was very dark after that, and then he started to be inactive. Tried to feed him a pea, but he's not interested. I put Melafix in the tank, which seemed to work almost immediately for my platy back in November. Any ideas? Ammo: 0, trite: 0 and Ph 7.2.

Is it alone? they do like a friedn or 4.

sick cory

You tested the water and it's fine. Melafix is a fairly effective product for use against bacterial infections. I would stop trying to feed the fish, for the moment.

If Melafix doesn't work and the fish is still alive, try treating for parasites. Look for something that is wide spectrum. If you can find something that is indicated for both internal and external parasites, that would be a good choice.

I moved him into a cup of tank water with a cut up pea and am floating the cup in the tank. He's alert and swimming around like he used to. So, after 1/2 hour, I moved him back into the tank and he immediately swam to a corner and lay flat against the stones -- it's like he suddenly hates the tank! I only have 2 platies and 3 neon tetras in there. Any ideas?

Lonely Cory

I think you cory wants company. Cories do better with a few cory buddies. From your previous postings I am guessing you have a 20 gallon which means you have space to pick your cory up a friend or two.

Renie, the poor thing is lonely like puffernewbie said. They like to have a friend. My two dwarf spotted cories in my 2 1/2g tank w/my betta are happy. One of the original cories I bought died cause he was so small and stressed from the move from the LFS. But the new one I replaced him with and the other original one are so happy with each other they barely pay attention to the betta. In fact all three of them rest/sleep next to each other and swim in the filter current together!!

You have a 20g like newbie said? If so I am having in my 20g tank I am going to set up next week is eventually (after a slow cycling) is:

2 dwarf neon gouramis
10 or so cardinal tetras
3 dwarft spotted cory

Yea get your little cory guy a friend, we all like friends don't we?!
Good luck and keep us posted!
:)

Aww, guys, I feel bad!! I will do that--get him a buddy. He has been more alert and swimming around in his temporary floating cup. he actually ate a little. I do have a 20 gallon and I presently just have:

3 neon tetras
2 platies
5 ghost shrimp
1 otocinclus
1 cory catfish

Thanks everyone!

The more freinds the better. Corys like groups of 5 or 6 or more. If you don't want all Albino's then you can add Bronze Corys (Aeneus Corys) as well as the Albino cory is actually just an albino strain of Bronze cory.

completely agree with the lonely cory concept! I keep cories and they are a big time schooling fish! they never stray far from each other - i have a group of 9 they huddle in a little hang out and lay at the bottom together when they are resting - i would get at least two more (of the same type)
