I originally had this as part of a post in the reefkeepers forum, but i thought it might be more appropriate if I moved it here.

are there any rules of thumb when it comes to stocking saltwater fish? I was thinking in a 30 gallon I would want 2 small (2") gobies, 2 cardinalfish (3"), 1 orange clown (4") and 1 dwarf angelfish (~5"). plus of course the various inverts and cleanup critters. I suspect this may be too much, but what do you think.

I think the rule of thumb is 1" per 10 gallons, also dependant on the fishes' temperment

it would be pushing it but if you a large skimmer and a lot of territorys maybe it could work
what goby i have to neon goby they are may and 1.5" so two of thos wont do much but it be best to only have about 3 fish or 4 small fish in a 30

althought i had one years ago with good sucess a 29 gallon 1 tomato clown 1 cleaner wrasse and 1 longnose butterfly along with a condy anemone without a skimmer

out of those fish i listed do you see any compatibility problems? for example i don't want the dwarf angle chasing around the cardinalfish or something. I would probably have a HOB refugium type filter, live rock and live sand, some kind of skimmer (i don't know much about them yet), and change with RO water. hopefully that would be enough for the 6 fish because i really like them all :) and like you said I don't figure the gobies will really count much since they are only up to 2 in and slim ones at that.
