So we built a wood hood from some DIY ideas we found. It turned out so heavy that we then built legs for it. Yuck! We definately failed on this project. It's too heavy to hang or sit on the aquarium (siphon hose and return on the back of the tank in the way too), and it's just ugly.

We've searched the internet for 2 days trying to find something lightweight that we can hang from the ceiling to put the lights in. It's easy to find the whole setup, but we just need the shell. We have: 4 VHO URI 48" 96 with 2 PFO electronic ballasts (mounted separate from the lights). Just bought this kit this month, so it's new. MH pendants will be added later in the year.

Any ideas where we could find something made out of anything but wood? We bought some gutters based on a DIY project page, but hubby nixed that as well.

Thanks for your advice!

How about colored acrylic?? It's easy to cut, finish, glue, etc. I'm probably going to make an enclosure to hide my MH/PC pendant for my 36 bowfront soon. Since my tank has black trim and the stand is black, I'll probably go with black acrylic.

Can you post a pic of it?

i have just made a great steel hood that dosn't weigh alot at all! i have set up a thread on the main d.i.y message board. have a look at the pics and you might get some ideas, it worked great for me.

Yeah, it was 3/4 plywood. He made it tall to allow for the MH going in later.

Hubby said he'd spank me if I posted a picture. He's quite embarrassed.

Thanks Oliver, I'll check yours out.

O go on it cant be that bad, pllllllzzz :D

as if no one else made anything fugly before, LOL. I might tell you about one or two things but there's no way I'd incriminate myself telling all of them. Heck, I've forgotten most of them thank god.

I have made several hoods over time some from sheet metal some from plastic and some from wood ..
For the do it your selfer wood or plastic would be the better options easer to cut glue or nail and paint ..
Nothing gives a sleeker look than the folded sheet metal ..

Ok, here's the ugly hood. He really tried, so I feel bad for him.

Hubby is going to a metal fabricators shop today to get a stainless steel hood made that he can hang from the ceiling. We're still laughing about this one.
