I was thinking of getting one and I was wondering for price and performance what is the best deal out there, no I don't want to spend over $900, no I don't play alot of games I'm looking for something to keep my genealogy files on so when I go to the library I don't have to carry tons of paperwork with me

In the Uk we have one place that sells Laptops called "Matrix" notebooks, these have intel P4's, and large hard drive's at only around £500 - £600, that about 900$ me thinks, but its a case of finding someone in the USA that sells these, it may be just one shop over here that sells these.

I will have a look for you.

given your needs I'd say buy a 70-120$ used pocket PC that supports .doc or .txt or whatever file types you use and just sync it with your pc. I dont think you need a laptop given your stated needs.

Dell has some laptops in that price range. You really only need a low end laptop to be able to run a word processing program and possibly hook up to the internet. Try to make sure it has a spot to hook a lanline into (highspeed internet, like a big phone cable).

I notice that Dell also sells refurbished laptops, and they will be cheaper or the same price with more features. And they are having a sale on them right now.

But if you can get used to a Pocket PC they are pretty cool and much easier to carry around. I bought a keyboard for mine as well so it is extra easy to input data.

GEL, what program are you using for your genealogy system? I ask because Timmain Sr. also is big into genealogy, and uses some programs that might not run well on a laptop due to the memory requirements.

At risk of violating the "no religion" clause of GCC - Are any of those of you that are into genealogy LDS? Just asking, since I am and wonder if there are others about.

LDS has a massive database of familial records, not just those of their own order. I dunno how that happened, but that's one of the main DBs that Timm Sr. uses.
